Why is my computer so slow?
Windows
Most likely you already have anti-virus and spam blocker software, and infections are not the cause. There are several factors to consider, the most common are as follows:
- Your web browser and your programs are creating cache/temp files.
- You may need to upgrade the RAM (memory) to efficiently run multiple programs simultaneously.
- You may have several processes running that could be disabled.
Clear the temp files:
*click* START
*click* RUN
*type* %temp%
*click* OK
*select all* and delete files
Some files may have to be deleted individually, and others may give you a warning that says xxx.whatever file is in use, just click ok and continue with what you can delete.
How to check how much RAM you have.:
*click* START
*right click* MY COMPUTER
*select* PROPERTIES
The amount of RAM will be listed under the GENERAL tab.
Today's programs rely heavily on "Random Access Memory" RAM. For Windows XP to run programs like iTunes at the same time you have your email and web browser up
while writing a paper or playing with photos, you will want at least 1gb of RAM. Keep in mind while you are doing all of that, your anti-virus and spam blocker among other processes are running in the background. With RAM as cheap as it is, upgrade to 2gb and after cleaning your temp files your machine will feel as fast as (faster than) when you bought it.
Checking the processes:
*click* START
*click* RUN
*type* msconfig
Under the SERVICES and STARTUP there are several items that should NOT be disabled, however there are a few that can be disabled to help reduce the amount of work your machine is doing in the background. There are several documents on-line that will be more helpful to your specific situation. Go to google and search with quotes with an item you want to know more about.
Example of a google search to see if I can disable: "jusched" after reading about it I'll leave it alone.
