Mac OSx

Why is my computer so slow?

Mac (Apple)
There are several factors to consider, the most common are as follows:

  • Your web browser and your programs are creating cache/temp files.
  • You may need to upgrade the RAM (memory) to efficiently run multiple programs simultaneously.
  • Software needs an allotment of free space.

Clear the temp files:
Mac creates a lot of temp and .DS files. The best and easiest way to deal with it is to use third party software and scripts. DS Cleaner and Clean Sweep are a couple of good programs. We will have links to the company soon.

How to check how much RAM you have.:

The amount of RAM will be listed. Today's programs rely heavily on "Random Access Memory" RAM. For a mac to run programs like iTunes at the same time you have your email and web browser up while writing a paper or playing with photos, you will want at least 2gb of RAM. Keep in mind while you are using all of those programs, your glossy icons and roll-over animation processes use a bit of memory. With RAM as cheap as it is, upgrade to 2gb and after cleaning your temp files your machine will feel as fast as (faster than) when you bought it.

Software needs:
Some programs like Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator need scratch disk space. For light use with these particular programs, keep a fair amount of hard drive space available. Anything less than 5gb of free space has the potential to do some kinda goofy things. For a more advance solution, you may want to create a separate partition on your drive with 20gb and dedicate it to scratch space.
